    Decline in condition of northern bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) in the Gulf of Maine

    The northern bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) is a highly mobile apex predator in the Gulf of Maine. Despite current stock assessments that indicate historically high abundance of its main prey, Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus), commercial fishermen have observed declines in the somatic condition of northern bluefin tuna during the last decade. We examined this claim by reviewing detailed logbooks of northern bluefin tuna condition from a local fishermen’s cooperative and applying multinomial regression, a robust tool for exploring how a categorical variable may be related to other variables of interest. The data set contained >3082 observations of condition (fat and oil content and fish shape) from fish landed between 1991 and 2004. Energy from stored lipids is used for migration and reproduction; therefore a reduction in energy acquisition on bluefin tuna feeding grounds could diminish allocations to growth and gamete production and have detrimental consequences for rebuilding the western Atlantic population. A decline in northern bluefin tuna somatic condition could indicate substantial changes in the bottom-up transfer of energy in the Gulf of Maine, shifts in their reproductive or migratory patterns, impacts of fishing pressure, or synergistic effects from multiple causes

    The Foraging Ecology of the Gray Rat Snake (Elaphe Obsoleta Spiloides)-Visual Stimuli Facilitate Location of Arboreal Prey

    We examined the responsiveness of adult gray rat snakes to avian prey in enclosures that simulated natural habitat conditions. Subjects searched for arboreal nest contents in the presence or absence of a bird model flown so as to simulate avian provisioning behavior. In the absence of the model, gray rat snake latency to capture prey was over 92 % greater than when searching for nest contents with the model. Snakes responded to model flight by turning their heads in the direction of its movement. We conclude that gray rat snakes perceive relatively distant visual cues from prey, and that nest provisioning (activity localized around a nest) may facilitate snakes correctly choosing to ascend trees that contain active nests and ignoring those that do not

    We investigate symbolic and regular powers of monomial ideals. For a square-free monomial ideal II in k[x0,,xn]k[x_0, \ldots, x_n] we show It(m+e1)e+r)I^{t(m+e-1)-e+r)} is a subset of M(t1)(e1)+r1(I(m))tM^{(t-1)(e-1)+r-1}(I^{(m)})^t for all positive integers mm, tt and rr, where ee is the big-height of II and M=(x0,,xn)M = (x_0, \ldots, x_n). This captures two conjectures (r=1r=1 and r=er=e): one of Harbourne-Huneke and one of Bocci-Cooper-Harbourne.     Confocal Ellipsoidal Reflector System for a Mechanically Scanned Active Terahertz Imager

    We present the design of a reflector system that can rapidly scan and refocus a terahertz beam for high-resolution standoff imaging applications. The proposed optical system utilizes a confocal Gregorian geometry with a small mechanical rotating mirror and an axial displacement of the feed. For operation at submillimeter wavelengths and standoff ranges of many meters, the imaging targets are electrically very close to the antenna aperture. Therefore the main reflector surface must be an ellipse, instead of a parabola, in order to achieve the best imaging performance. Here we demonstrate how a simple design equivalence can be used to generalize the design of a Gregorian reflector system based on a paraboloidal main reflector to one with an ellipsoidal main reflector. The system parameters are determined by minimizing the optical path length error, and the results are validated with numerical simulations from the commercial antenna software package GRASP. The system is able to scan the beam over 0.5 m in cross-range at a 25 m standoff range with less than 1% increase of the half-power beam-width

    The Incidence of Low-Metallicity Lyman-Limit Systems at z~3.5: Implications for the Cold-Flow Hypothesis of Baryonic Accretion

    Cold accretion is a primary growth mechanism of simulated galaxies, yet observational evidence of "cold flows" at redshifts where they should be most efficient (z=2z=2-4) is scarce. In simulations, cold streams manifest as Lyman-limit absorption systems (LLSs) with low heavy-element abundances similar to those of the diffuse IGM. Here we report on an abundance survey of 17 H I-selected LLSs at z=3.2z=3.2-4.4 which exhibit no metal absorption in SDSS spectra. Using medium-resolution spectra obtained at Magellan, we derive ionization-corrected metallicities (or limits) with a Markov-Chain Monte Carlo sampling that accounts for the large uncertainty in NHIN_{\rm HI} measurements typical of LLSs. The metal-poor LLS sample overlaps with the IGM in metallicity and is best described by a model where 7111+13%71^{+13}_{-11}\% are drawn from the IGM chemical abundance distribution. These represent roughly half of all LLSs at these redshifts, suggesting that 28-40%\% of the general LLS population at z3.7z\sim3.7 could trace unprocessed gas. An ancillary sample of ten LLSs without any a priori metal-line selection is best fit with 4812+14%48^{+14}_{-12}\% of metallicities drawn from the IGM. We compare these results with regions of a moving-mesh simulation; the simulation finds only half as many baryons in IGM-metallicity LLSs, and most of these lie beyond the virial radius of the nearest galaxy halo. A statistically significant fraction of all LLSs have low metallicity and therefore represent candidates for accreting gas; large-volume simulations can establish what fraction of these candidates actually lie near galaxies and the observational prospects for detecting the presumed hosts in emission.Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures; Submitted to ApJ; Corrected figure 16

    Time-Delay Multiplexing of Two Beams in a Terahertz Imaging Radar

    We demonstrate a time-delay multiplexing technique that doubles the frame rate of a 660–690-GHz imaging radar with minimal additional instrument complexity. This is done by simultaneously projecting two offset, orthogonally polarized radar beams generated and detected by a common source and receiver. Beam splitting and polarization rotation is accomplished with a custom designed waveguide hybrid coupler and twist. A relative time lag of approximately 2 ns between the beams’ waveforms is introduced using a quasi-optical delay line, followed by spatial recombination using a selectively reflective wire grid. This delay is much longer than the approximately 20-ps time-of-flight resolution of the 30-GHz bandwidth radar, permitting the two beams’ reflected signals from a compact target to be easily distinguished in digital post-processing of the single receiver channel

    5-Year survival of pediatric anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with living donor hamstring tendon grafts

    Background: It is well accepted that there is a higher incidence of repeat anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in the pediatric population after ACL reconstruction (ACLR) with autograft tissue compared with adults. Hamstring autograft harvest may contribute to the risk for repeat ACL injuries in this high functional demand group. A novel method is the use of a living donor hamstring tendon (LDHT) graft from a parent; however, there is currently limited research on the outcomes of this technique, particularly beyond the short term. Purpose/Hypothesis: The purpose was to determine the medium-term survival of the ACL graft and the contralateral ACL (CACL) after primary ACLR with the use of an LDHT graft from a parent in those aged less than 18 years and to identify factors associated with subsequent ACL injuries. It was hypothesized that ACLR with the use of an LDHT provides acceptable midterm outcomes in pediatric patients. Study Design: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. Methods: Between 2005 and 2014, 247 (of 265 eligible) consecutive patients in a prospective database, having undergone primary ACLR with the use of an LDHT graft and aged less than 18 years, were included. Outcomes were assessed at a minimum of 2 years after surgery including data on ACL reinjuries, International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) scores, and current symptoms, as well as factors associated with the ACL reinjury risk were investigated. Results: Patients were reviewed at a mean of 4.5 years (range, 24-127 months [10.6 years]) after ACLR with an LDHT graft. Fifty-one patients (20.6%) sustained an ACL graft rupture, 28 patients (11.3%) sustained a CACL rupture, and 2 patients sustained both an ACL graft rupture and a CACL rupture (0.8%). Survival of the ACL graft was 89%, 82%, and 76% at 1, 2, and 5 years, respectively. Survival of the CACL was 99%, 94%, and 86% at 1, 2, and 5 years, respectively. Survival of the ACL graft was favorable in patients with Tanner stage 1-2 at the time of surgery versus those with Tanner stage 3-5 at 5 years (87% vs 69%, respectively; hazard ratio, 3.7; P = .01). The mean IKDC score was 91.7. A return to preinjury levels of activity was reported by 59.1%. Conclusion: After ACLR with an LDHT graft from a parent in those aged less than 18 years, a second ACL injury (ACL graft or CACL injury) occurred in 1 in 3 patients. The 5-year survival rate of the ACL graft was 76%, and the 5-year survival rate of the CACL was 86%. High IKDC scores and continued participation in sports were maintained over the medium term. Importantly, there was favorable survival of the ACL graft in patients with Tanner stage 1-2 compared with patients with Tanner stage 3-5 over 5 years. Patients with Tanner stage 1-2 also had a significantly lower incidence of second ACL injuries over 5 years compared with those with Tanner stage 3-5, occurring in 1 in 5 patients. Thus, an LDHT graft from a parent is an appropriate graft for physically immature children

    Chaos in Time Dependent Variational Approximations to Quantum Dynamics

    Dynamical chaos has recently been shown to exist in the Gaussian approximation in quantum mechanics and in the self-consistent mean field approach to studying the dynamics of quantum fields. In this study, we first show that any variational approximation to the dynamics of a quantum system based on the Dirac action principle leads to a classical Hamiltonian dynamics for the variational parameters. Since this Hamiltonian is generically nonlinear and nonintegrable, the dynamics thus generated can be chaotic, in distinction to the exact quantum evolution. We then restrict attention to a system of two biquadratically coupled quantum oscillators and study two variational schemes, the leading order large N (four canonical variables) and Hartree (six canonical variables) approximations. The chaos seen in the approximate dynamics is an artifact of the approximations: this is demonstrated by the fact that its onset occurs on the same characteristic time scale as the breakdown of the approximations when compared to numerical solutions of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation.Comment: 10 pages (12 figures), RevTeX (plus macro), uses epsf, minor typos correcte

    Improved fidelity of triggered entangled photons from single quantum dots

    We demonstrate the on-demand emission of polarisation-entangled photon pairs from the biexciton cascade of a single InAs quantum dot embedded in a GaAs/AlAs planar microcavity. Improvements in the sample design blue shifts the wetting layer to reduce the contribution of background light in the measurements. Results presented show that >70% of the detected photon pairs are entangled. The high fidelity of the (|HxxHx>+|VxxVx>)/2^0.5 state that we determine is sufficient to satisfy numerous tests for entanglement. The improved quality of entanglement represents a significant step towards the realisation of a practical quantum dot source compatible with applications in quantum information.Comment: 9 pages.
